Whimsical and colorful, the acrylic paintings in this exhibit derive their strength from a simplicity of gesture. With qualities somehow reminiscent of traditional Chinese brush painting, subway graffiti art, and even early 20th century animation, Hughes' works achieve a new and energetic calligraphic style all their own. Using everyday situations as a point of departure, the artist's characters cavort through a world of dilemma and delight. Beyond the distinctive symbolism lie clever references to the various trials and tribulations of a modern existence.
